There is not a
huge difference between daytime and nighttime skin care products. However, these subtle differences are worth noting and may help you determine which products are right for you and your skin type.
Daytime skin care products, such as our
Tropical Vanilla Day Cream, often contain SPF. These products are typically worn under makeup and have to have a lighter consistency in order to remain both
comfortable and
breathable. We also know that nighttime products tend to be on the richer, heavier side. But does this mean that they contain stronger ingredients and work better than their daytime counterparts? Not necessarily. In fact, many estheticians and dermatologists would argue that daytime and nighttime products are
equally effective. “The active ingredients in day creams are different than those in night creams, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t significant for achieving optimal skin health,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a New York dermatologist. "Some ingredients, like SPF and antioxidants, are better received by the skin in the morning versus at night due to the body's circadian rhythms, so using them at night would provide little to no benefit. Because your skin is most likely to be under direct UV rays during the day, regular use of SPF (making sure it is no less than 30) could mean the difference between a bright, youthful complexion or a discolored, aged one." So if they really are
equally effective, why not just opt for daytime products? Wouldn't that be easier? No. The skin repairs itself while you sleep overnight, erasing any damage it incurred during the day. For this reason, nighttime products also help to maintain healthy skin and reduce early signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and crow's feet around the eyes. Nighttime products focus on
moisture and
recovery, hence why they are usually much richer than day creams. Long story short, products designed for use at night
do contain stronger ingredients. However, they are
not more effective than daytime products - they just serve a very different purpose. Both should be utilized as important components of your daily skin care routine.
